Artistic Statement

I aspire to create honest work that elicits positive social change.  I believe that a director should think innovatively in order to brainstorm different and original ways to translate a story.  Creating the world that a play lives in, as well as collaborating with other artists, is what draws me to directing.  I aim to direct, observe and assist on an array of projects in order to have a greater understanding of different directorial styles and approaches.  I believe that you gain something from each new project and artist you work with.

My creativity consists of collaboration, thinking outside of the box, and figuring out how to take negative or sour moments in my life and find the positives within them.  I want to create work that people can relate to and see themselves in.  I also want to create work that introduces audiences to a new world, with experiences they’ve never had, in order to help them leave the theatre with a greater sense of empathy and understanding of what someone else’s world is like.

Art is all around us.  I think that artists see the world a little differently.  We soak in our environment, and find inspiration in our daily life.  We sometimes forget to do this on a day to day basis, but when we read a play or start a new project, we are able to take our experiences and connect them with the story we are trying to tell.  I think that it is important to see different parts of the world, meet people from different cultures and see how they live.  If we put ourselves in new situations and challenge ourselves, that is how we grow and flourish as artists- but, more importantly, as people.
